So I just spent all morning on the phone trying to find a place to drop of my old TV for recycling. Apparently if you live in Boone County there is only one place that will charge you to take your old TV. Wow. With all the movement towards flat panel TVs I can see a lot of folks going through the same process only to be told I will drive it and then pay for someone to make $ off of the parts from it. If anyone wonders why the landfills are are still running over with this stuff there is your answer. If it wasn;t for the fact that I'm close to the Spring program I guess I wold be ripped off or just give up. Arrgg !

You bring up some great ideas here and I totally understand your point of view. I'll tell you what I know. There is only one game in town recycling TVs and that is Apex Technology. They apparently don't make any money at all off of recycling TVs although they do make money from recycling computers. Apex tells us that they are recycling TVs solely because they want to keep the lead that is in the CRT out of the landfills.

We at Solid Waste know that the availability of TV recycling is an issue and we're doing our best to find a good solution. Unfortunately, if there is a free way to dispose of something then it's difficult to justify using taxpayer funds to pay for a costly collection event. In this case, TVs can still go to the landfill where they will not cause any damage to the environment but will still be taking up space. Since we believe that TVs need to be recycled, we've applied for a grant fromt the State of Kentucky to help fund a TV colletion and recycling event in November, closer to the date of the digital switch over.

If I were you, I'd contact Judge-Executive Gary Moore or one of the Boone County Commissioners and express to them how important TV recycling is to you.

Thank you for your comments - These are important discussions we need to have!
